Short-term letting (STL) register information

The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment is currently progressing the Short Term Letting and Tourism Bill 2025 which will align with EU Short Term Rental (STR) Regulation. Fáilte Ireland will introduce the new STL register following the passage of the necessary legislation.

Short-term letting: Understanding the terminology  

What information is required?

Anyone letting accommodation for up to 21 nights must register each unit with Fáilte Ireland via an online portal. Each registered unit will receive a unique STL registration number, which must be shown on all listings and advertisements. To register, hosts will need to provide:

Additional information: Statutory obligations

Make a legal declaration: Hosts must confirm, through a legal declaration, that they meet the relevant statutory obligations about the unit. All hosts who may be unsure of their statutory obligations should obtain any clarification necessary to ensure their statutory obligations are being met.

Planning information: Planning policy for STL activity is set by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Local authorities are responsible for planning functions, including monitoring and enforcement. Fáilte Ireland does not have a role in planning and cannot advise on planning regulations. Individual or case-specific questions should be directed to the relevant local authority.
